Katherine makes an excellent point when she says "People are generally afraid of change." If you walk into a classroom and the desks are moved around, do you moan, or do you yell "Yippee!!!" (well, even if you didn't moan, you might not yell....:-D) But you get the drift.
So, are traditions bad? There's a saying that the Last Seven Words of any organization are "We've never done it this way before." Is this true?

Population control...hmmm. I never thought of that!! Since Shirley Jackson doesn't say WHY they do it, I think it's fascinating to see what you guys come up with.
