For the five or six of you who are just joining us...I thought I would repost all the questions in one easy-to-manage place :-)

THE LOTTERY - Shirley Jackson

First of all, did the ending surprise you?
Secondly, discuss the role of tradition in the story. How important is it? How does it affect us?
Thirdly (and optionally) post a strange or funny family tradition :-)

A MODEST PROPOSAL – Jonathan Swift

After you read "A Modest Proposal", I just want you to post your reaction...we'll go from there!

A SOUND OF THUNDER – Ray Bradbury
1. Do you think the outcome from one butterfly could be that monumental? How? Why?
2. If you could choose a time to return to, when would it be? Why?

How can a single butterfly affect language? Here's something to think about. The original poetry was spoken, not written. What if man was never inspired by something beautiful that God created? What if man never decided "I have to somehow save this because it is so beautiful?" and looked for a way to keep things...thus inventing language. What if our language was born, but changed forever by the lack of beauty in the world? What if, when English was created in Anglo-Saxon England, no love or gentleness was ever introduced...just warfare?

Hey, I don't have answers...just questions. :-)

Keep writing!!

NEW QUESTION DAY!!

Hello, fellow scholars :-) Today's new question is about "A Sound of Thunder", which is truly from the Sci Fi genre, since it involves technology and the future - and it's one of my favorite stories. Here are your discussion topics:

1. Do you think the outcome from one butterfly could be that monumental? How? Why?
2. If you could choose a time to return to, when would it be? Why?
